Texas’ New Migrant Arrest Law May Be Sued by Justice Department!

0

CheapNailsalonsnearmeThe U.S. Justice Department has issued a stern warning to the state of Texas regarding a new law that permits the arrest of migrants crossing the border illegally. This contentious legislation, championed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, is set to take effect on March 5.

It criminalizes illegal entry into Texas, subjecting offenders to possible jail time or fines. The federal government has raised constitutional concerns, stating that immigration enforcement falls under federal jurisdiction. Moreover, the law’s potential to impact foreign relations has been highlighted as a significant issue.

The Justice Department has given Texas a deadline of January 3 to desist from enforcing the law, failing which it will face legal action. Governor Abbott, undeterred, has expressed readiness to defend the law up to the Supreme Court if necessary.

He has been critical of the Biden administration’s immigration policies and believes in the necessity of state-level measures to manage immigration effectively. However, his previous attempts at enforcing similar state-level immigration laws have met with obstacles in federal court.
