House Bill 1, a bipartisan initiative sponsored by State Representative Tyler Sirois, Rep. Fiona McFarland, and Rep. Michele Rayner, aims to shield children from the addictive nature of social media platforms.
The legislation prohibits children under the age of 16 from creating social media accounts and mandates the implementation of age verification measures by social media platforms. Recognizing the deliberate use of addictive design features by these platforms, such as algorithms and infinite scrolling, lawmakers assert the need to safeguard children from prolonged exposure.
Acknowledging the bipartisan support for the bill, legislators emphasize the importance of addressing the harmful impact of social media on children’s well-being. House Speaker Paul Renner underscores Florida’s commitment to protecting children’s mental health, highlighting the state’s duty to safeguard their childhood and development.
