CNS News– Texas beaches are experiencing an influx of blue dragons, strikingly beautiful but potentially dangerous sea creatures that are disrupting spring break plans for many visitors. These shell-less mollusks, known as “the most beautiful killer in the ocean,” have been washing up in large numbers along the shores of North Padre Island.
The blue dragons, scientifically known as Glaucus Atlanticus sea slugs, are equipped with stinging cells that can deliver more powerful stings than Portuguese man o’ wars. Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s marine research institute has issued a warning to beachgoers, advising them to avoid touching the creatures due to their venomous nature.
The arrival of the blue dragons is attributed to strong southeast winds that Texas experiences during the spring, which blow the creatures onto the shore. They are also attracted to other venomous aquatic species, such as man-o-wars, which are swept by the winds.

Despite their small size, about an inch long, blue dragons possess enough venomous power to cause harm to humans. Their sting can result in symptoms such as nausea, pain, and vomiting, potentially requiring medical attention.
Experts caution that the influx of blue dragons is just the beginning, as thousands more are expected to wash up on the coast in the coming weeks. This phenomenon, referred to as a “blue wave,” is likely to continue as spring progresses and strong southeast winds persist, carrying these fascinating yet perilous creatures ashore.
