- Being Interviewed and Interrogated are 2 Different Things: The only thing that an interview is is an interview. We are just going to ask and answer questions to get more information about the probe. A detective will ask you a lot of questions to get you to tell the truth.
- Your Trash is Fair Game: The cops can search your trash can as soon as you roll it to the curb. The same goes for if you threw away the drink they offered you. They could still get your DNA from it.
- Police Won’t Be as Hard on You if You Confess: It’s true. Just tell them the truth, and they’ll make it a lot better. Not sure if the charge will be lessened, though; the DA could still bring a serious charge.
- No Such Thing as “Off the Record”: Anything you say can be used in the probe; this is not journalism.
- Officers Do Not Have to Tell You Why They are Talking to You: Detectives from the police are not required by law to tell you why they are talking to you or asking you questions.
- Police Officers Are Not Your Friends: The police are not there to be your friends; they are there to follow the rules. To be fair, though, a cop might be nice to you to calm things down.
- You Don’t Have to Talk to Or Let an Officer Into Your Home: You don’t have to let a police officer into your home unless they have a search order. You don’t have to talk to the police if they come to your door. You can even tell them to leave.
- Ask if You’re Free to Go: After you answer the officer’s questions, you should always ask if you can leave. You can leave without having to do anything else if the cop says yes.
- Sometimes officers break the Law: A police officer is not perfect, and neither are you.
- Ignorance IS NOT the Same as Innocence: If you break the rule, you can still get in trouble, even if you don’t know about it.
