A surge in violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has resulted in a devastating toll, with at least 200 people killed and thousands forced to flee their homes.
The resurgence of conflict has been attributed to the March 23 Movement (M23) armed rebel group’s aggressive advance towards Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, triggering intense fighting with the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and other armed factions.
Intensified Fighting, Mounting Casualties
Heavy artillery, shelling, and indiscriminate bombing in civilian areas have become commonplace, according to aid organizations witnessing an influx of wounded in Goma and Sake.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) reports a constant flow of patients arriving by motorcycle and bus, while Doctors Without Borders (MSF) describes the situation as “extremely concerning” with overwhelmed hospitals and insufficient supplies.
The United Nations estimates that over 200 civilians have been killed in Ituri province alone, with over 52,000 fleeing their homes in recent weeks. This escalation has destroyed over 2,000 homes and closed or demolished 80 schools.
The M23, one of numerous armed groups vying for power, land, and resources in the mineral-rich eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, has been locked in conflict with various militia groups for decades.
