CNS NewsThe family of Devonte Brown, a Black man fatally shot by Cobb County Police Officer Ian McConnell in Georgia, has filed a lawsuit alleging the officer’s use of “excessive and deadly force.” Brown’s tragic death occurred during a routine traffic stop in August 2021, sparking outrage and renewed scrutiny over law enforcement practices.

According to the lawsuit, Brown was pulled over for “driving erratically” near Powder Springs Road and State Route 120A in Marietta. Despite complying with initial requests, Brown drove off, leading to a brief chase that culminated in a collision with a concrete pillar, deploying his car’s airbags.

As officers surrounded Brown’s vehicle, McConnell arrived on the scene and rammed his patrol vehicle into the driver’s side of Brown’s car, effectively trapping him. In a harrowing turn of events captured by body camera footage, McConnell is heard shouting commands at Brown to “get your f—ing hands up” before firing a barrage of shots, ultimately claiming Brown’s life.

The lawsuit alleges that McConnell’s actions displayed “shocking and willful indifference” to Brown’s rights, as he fired eight of the 12 bullets that struck Brown, despite Brown being trapped and unarmed. Despite the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s discovery of a firearm in Brown’s car, attorneys representing the family argue that Brown posed no immediate threat, as he was immobilized by the deployed airbags.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the lawsuit serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for accountability and justice in cases of police brutality. Brown’s family, along with their legal representation, remains steadfast in their pursuit of accountability and systemic reform to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
