Heartbreaking Neglect: Mother from Ohio Confesses to Taking a 10-Day Trip to Puerto Rico While Her Toddler Died of Hunger at Home!
CNS News– A woman has admitted to killing her 16-month-old daughter by leaving her alone for more than a week while she went on vacation. The girl died of hunger and thirst. Kristel A. Candelario, 32, from Cleveland, was charged with aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, and putting children in danger in June 2023.
A news release from the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office says she pleaded guilty on Thursday to one count of aggravated murder and one count of endangering children. Candelario left her daughter alone at home and came back 10 days later to find the child not responding.
The police say that Candelario left her daughter Jailyn alone and unattended at her home near Lorain Avenue and West 97th Street on June 6 while she went to Detroit and Puerto Rico. Ten days later, on June 16, in the morning, she went back and found the girl not responding. She called the police.
People at the house said the child was dead. The release says she was found in a playpen that was dirty with poop and urine. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office said she died of severe dehydration and hunger, and they said she was killed. The prosecutor called Candelario’s choice “selfish.”

“This case is one of those truly unimaginable cases that will stick with me for many years to come,” said Prosecutor Michael O’Malley in the news release. “As prosecutors, it is our job to speak up for the victims. Today, we did so for 16-month-old Jailyn, who is no longer with us because her mother made selfish choices.” Being found guilty today is the first step toward justice for Jailyn.
Candelario was supposed to go to court on Monday, February 26. The FOX 8 I-Team reported that in December, a mental health doctor checked her competency and said she was fit to stand trial. The judge will now decide Candelario’s fate on March 18.
