MD Twin-Attacking Fugitive Caught at NJ/NY Border After 50-Mile High-Speed Chase!

Ellicott City, MD – December 5, 2023: In a gripping turn of events, Reese E. Wetzel, a 23-year-old from Ellicott City, Maryland, was apprehended near the New Jersey/New York border following a high-stakes pursuit spanning 50 miles. Wetzel, accused of attempting to murder his twin sister, led authorities on a nearly hour-long chase before being captured on December 4.

The incident began in Maryland, where Wetzel reportedly stabbed his sister multiple times during a heated argument. Fleeing the scene in her stolen white 2019 Subaru Outback, Wetzel set off a Sirius XM alert at 8:13 p.m. on Sunday, drawing the attention of Edison, NJ, police.

The alert directed officers to Route 1 at Main Street. Officer Phil Smith of the Edison Police Department first spotted the speeding Subaru on Woodbridge Avenue. With approval from Lt. Tim Hutson, Smith initiated a pursuit. The chase rapidly escalated as the New Jersey State Police joined in, following the Subaru through Somerset, Morris, Passaic, and finally Bergen counties.

Wetzel’s flight ended abruptly in Mahwah, on northbound Route 287 at mile marker 64.9, a considerable distance from where the pursuit began. Officer Smith and state troopers were forced to physically extract Wetzel from the vehicle.

During the apprehension, a trooper sustained a leg injury and was subsequently treated at Morristown Medical Center. Facing a slew of charges including being a fugitive from justice, eluding with a substantial risk of serious injury, resisting arrest, obstruction, and receiving stolen property, Wetzel remains in custody.

The vehicle involved in the pursuit was towed back to Edison for further investigation. This high-speed chase and subsequent arrest highlight the relentless efforts of law enforcement agencies to ensure public safety and bring fugitives to justice.
