Mother of Murdered Brooklyn 13-Year-Old Rejects ‘Gang’ Imputation for First Time!
CNS News– The Mother of the 13-year-old boy who was recently shot and killed on his way home from a Brooklyn Nets game spoke out in public for the first time on Monday. She said that her son was a kind boy and denied that he was in a gang. Troy Gill’s mother, Mary Culbertson, said through tears on Monday night, “He was a 13-year-old boy.”
“That should never have happened to him or any other baby. He was a baby.” That wasn’t fair to him. At 10:40 p.m. Thursday, Troy was walking alone near the corner of New York Ave. and Bergen Ave. in Crown Heights when he was shot several times in the chest and arm, according to police.
Police say that the child then called his mother for help and told her he was going to the nearby Brooklyn Children’s Museum. Troy passed out two blocks away from where he was shot. The badly hurt teen was quickly found on the sidewalk by medics. He was rushed to Kings County Hospital, but he could not be saved.
“There are no words,” Joseph Ward, Troy’s stepfather, said. “People shouldn’t have to bury their children.” It’s really bad.” Police investigating the murder found a connection between the teen’s death and the Trench Crew, a street gang active in Bedford-Stuyvesant and northern Brooklyn. However, the boy’s membership in the group wasn’t made public right away.
There was no way that Troy’s mother would admit that he was in a gang. “He was not in a gang,” Culbertson, who is 41 years old, said. “What a nice boy.” Like the other person, Ward said he wants “to change the narrative for Troy.” “He loved to dance,” Ward, who is 47 years old, said. “He was like James Brown and Michael Jackson.”
The boy’s sad mother saw Troy as a friend to everyone. She said through tears, “When I say everybody, it doesn’t matter who you were or where you were—he was your friend.” Somebody thought he shouldn’t be friends with one person because they didn’t like that person, which is an important part of the story.
His dad said that Troy was killed just before he turned 14. The person said, “He was too big to be here. He had a big personality.” “He’s not here with us anymore, but his spirit is, and he will always live on through us.” Troy lived in Crown Heights with his mother, stepfather, and two brothers.

On Monday night, dozens of people came together to remember the young man. “This is real,” Ward said, pointing to a big monument that was just cut together. The picture is sad, but it shows that he was loved. The man also said, “He was small but strong.” “The ground was his turf.” The person who killed Troy is still being sought by police.
