On Easter Sunday, a Massive 5-Alarm Fire Broke out Inside a Catholic Church in Brooklyn!

CNS NewsA five-alarm fire disrupted Easter Sunday services at Our Lady of the Rosary Pompeii in Brooklyn, New York. The fire, which occurred on Seigel Street in Bushwick just before 2 p.m., prompted a massive response from the New York Fire Department (FDNY). According to the FDNY, parishioners inside the church smelled smoke and immediately evacuated the building, which housed about 150 people at the time.

The fire quickly escalated to five alarms, requiring a significant firefighting effort. At least six people were treated for injuries sustained in the fire, including three parishioners and three firefighters. Fortunately, all injuries were minor. One firefighter fell from the second floor to the first floor while battling the blaze but was uninjured and able to continue fighting the fire.

Despite the intensity of the fire, the church portion of the building was largely saved, with only some water damage reported. The FDNY was able to extinguish the fire by 5:18 p.m. FDNY Fire Marshals are currently investigating the cause of the fire. Meanwhile, parishioners are left devastated by the damage to their beloved church.

Brooklyn Diocesan spokesperson John Qualione expressed sympathy, noting that the parishioners who escaped safely will be mourning the loss of their church on what should have been a joyful Easter celebration. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the bravery and dedication of the FDNY and first responders who put themselves at risk to save lives and protect property.
