One Floridian Sues “Cheesy” Combo Snacks, Claiming They Are Deficient in Cheese!

CNS NewsIn an unusual legal dispute that has captured public attention, a Florida resident, Edward Pistorio, has initiated a lawsuit against Mars, Inc., the parent company of the popular snack brand Combos. The crux of the lawsuit lies in Pistorio’s allegation that the cheddar cheese flavor of Combos snacks, despite being marketed with the promise of containing “REAL CHEESE,” falls short of expectations in terms of actual cheese content.

The packaging of the cheddar cheese-flavored Combos prominently features an image of a large block of cheese, alongside the claim that the snack’s filling is made with real cheese. This representation, however, is contested by Pistorio, who points out that the snack’s ingredient list reveals a cheese blend constituting less than 2% of the product.

The primary ingredients, as listed, include wheat flour, palm oil, dairy product solids, carbohydrates, and corn starch. The lawsuit, filed in the Florida Middle District Court, argues that the use of palm oil and dairy product solids as substitutes for real cheese compromises the snack’s nutritional value, quality, and taste.

The filing emphasizes that many consumers regard cheese as a healthy and nutritious option, owing to its protein content and the presence of vital vitamins and minerals such as calcium. The deceptive marketing claim, as per the lawsuit, not only misleads consumers but also unjustifiably contributes to the snack’s “premium” pricing, which stands at $2.59.

Pistorio’s legal action seeks compensatory damages from Mars, Inc. for what he alleges to be deceptive marketing practices, alongside any additional relief deemed appropriate by the court. This case mirrors a similar lawsuit filed in New York, highlighting a growing concern over the accuracy of product labeling and marketing in the food industry.
