With Texas boasting some of the most restrictive abortion laws in the nation, Democratic contenders view this topic as a critical focal point in their bid to unseat Cruz, who won re-election by a narrow margin in 2018.
The aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022 has heightened concerns among Democrats, prompting them to emphasize the urgency of protecting reproductive rights. The prevalence of abortion-related restrictions in Texas, coupled with the palpable fear stemming from post-Roe legislative changes, underscores the significance of this issue in the eyes of voters.
Leading the charge among Democratic hopefuls is Rep. Colin Allred, who has consistently spotlighted abortion rights in his campaign messaging. Allred’s strategic emphasis on this issue aligns with his vision of safeguarding fundamental freedoms, including the right to abortion access.

Gutierrez advocates for procedural reforms, including the abolition of the filibuster and the potential expansion of the Supreme Court, as mechanisms to secure reproductive freedoms. In contrast, Allred has been more reserved on the issue of court expansion, opting instead to focus on filibuster reform.
