New Law Would Affect Death Benefit Denial for Officer Anthony Varvaro’s Family!
CNS News–State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton and Assemblyman Charles Fall are advocating for legislative change after the family of Port Authority Police Officer Anthony Varvaro was denied an accidental death benefit. Officer Varvaro tragically lost his life in a head-on collision with a wrong-way driver on the New Jersey Turnpike while on his way to work on Sept. 11, 2022.
The state’s denial of the family’s initial claim is based on stipulations in the New York State Retirement and Social Security Law. However, legislation introduced by Scarcella-Spanton and Fall seeks to rectify this issue by permitting an accidental death benefit to be granted to the family of the fallen officer.
The proposed legislation would eliminate the need for a review of the initial claim and would ensure that Varvaro’s beneficiaries receive the appropriate death benefit, equivalent to three times his prior 12-month salary.
