CNS NewsIn a decisive move, Donald Trump solidifies his influence within the GOP as he takes the helm of the Republican National Committee (RNC). Following the withdrawal of Nikki Haley’s presidential bid, the RNC convened its spring meeting to formalize Trump’s grip on the national Republican Party.

The newly appointed leadership, handpicked by Trump, includes Michael Whatley, Chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, as the new RNC chairman, alongside Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of the former president, serving as co-chair. The unanimous votes signify Trump’s dominant role in shaping the party’s trajectory.

Ohio RNC member Jim Dickey, in nominating Whatley for the chairmanship, emphasized the mission to elect Donald J. Trump as the 47th President of the United States, regain control of the Senate, expand the majority in the House of Representatives, and secure victories in individual states. Replacing Ronna McDaniel, Trump’s previous appointee, Whatley steps into the position after serving as the RNC’s general counsel.

McDaniel’s tenure faced scrutiny amidst disappointing electoral outcomes during the Trump era, notably in 2018, 2020, and 2022. In her farewell remarks, McDaniel highlighted accomplishments such as significant growth in the party’s email list and the establishment of a small-dollar fundraising platform.

However, she acknowledged setbacks, attributing losses in the 2022 midterms partly to the contentious issue of abortion. With Trump loyalists now firmly in control, fundraising emerges as a critical priority for the RNC. President Joe Biden and Democratic committees boast a substantial cash advantage, underscoring the urgency for the RNC to bolster its financial resources.

Lara Trump, in her acceptance speech, emphasized the need to raise substantial funds, showcasing a $100,000 donation secured during the spring meetings. However, internal divisions surface regarding the allocation of RNC funds, with some advocating for financial support towards Trump’s legal expenses amidst criminal and civil indictments.
