Trump Pays $392k to New York Times After Lost Tax Document Disclosure Case!

CNS NewsFormer President Donald Trump has paid a hefty sum of $392,000 to The New York Times to cover legal costs following his unsuccessful lawsuit against the newspaper and its journalists. The lawsuit stemmed from a 2018 investigation into Trump’s finances, which included the disclosure of confidential tax records.

The Times spokesperson confirmed to CNN on Monday that Trump had settled the fees as ordered by Judge Robert R. Reed in January, more than eight months after the lawsuit was dismissed. Trump’s lawsuit against The New York Times included various allegations, including claims of “tortious interference” against the journalists involved.

However, Judge Reed dismissed the case, ruling that the journalists’ conduct was protected by the New York Constitution. The Pulitzer Prize-winning reporting series authored by David Barstow, Susanne Craig, and Russ Buettner was cited as being in the public interest, justifying The Times’ actions.

The dismissal of Trump’s claims against The New York Times was attributed to recent amendments to New York’s anti-SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation) law, which protects defendants from lawsuits targeting their First Amendment-protected activities.

The Times hailed the decision as a victory for press freedom, with a spokesman emphasizing the importance of the anti-SLAPP statute in safeguarding journalists from attempts to silence them through legal means.
